Five Moves to Resurrect Your Worst Piece

With no direct tactics, don't hunt for checks; find your worst piece and plan a route to an outpost.

Difficulty 3/5 · ≈ 8 min · 5 key decisions · Theme:Improving the worst piece and building an outpost

When the position is calm, many players push a random flank pawn just to feel they did something. A more reliable question: which of my pieces is the worst, and how can it actually join the fight?

White's knight on b1 is still on its starting square while the rest of the army works. Your five-move plan is to find its route, land it on f5, and consolidate with a center pawn.

Today's Challenge

Plan a five-move route for the b1 knight

Improve the white knight along d2, f1, g3, f5, then reinforce the center with d4. Every move serves the same plan.

Review: Judge the route by its destination

  1. Nbd2 takes the knight off its starting square and establishes a transfer route.
  2. Nf1-g3 is a classic regrouping: each step looks slow, but together they have a clear aim.
  3. Nf5 reaches an outpost that pawns can hardly drive away.
  4. d4 consolidates the knight's work with central control, growing from piece improvement to whole-board coordination.
Takeaway: With no direct tactics, find your worst piece and design a two- or three-stop route for it, instead of playing a convenient-looking pawn move.
